* Departing from Basel-Mulhouse. ** Estimate, as no average is published: the calculator shows the best real price of the moment instead.

Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Milan and Rome are often the cheapest departure points for Tunis. From Germany, Switzerland or the Netherlands, tickets cost much more: that's where the ferry with your own car, from Genoa or Civitavecchia, makes the most sense.

When to book?

For Tunis, Djerba and Monastir, the best time is usually 2 to 3 months before departure. Booking almost a year ahead is not a good deal: prices are often higher then.

As for days, the data show it's best to buy on a Sunday, fly out on a Thursday and come back on a Tuesday.

Flight delayed or cancelled: up to €400 per passenger

Under EU rules, if your flight arrives more than 3 hours late, or is cancelled less than 14 days before departure, you may be entitled to €250 per passenger on flights up to 1,500 km (Marseille, Lyon, Milan, Rome… to Tunis) and €400 beyond that (Paris–Djerba, Brussels or Amsterdam to Tunisia). This applies to every flight departing from the European Union, and to flights to Europe operated by a European airline. Bad weather or air traffic control strikes can rule out compensation.

In 2026, the EU is preparing a reform: the provisional agreement keeps the 3-hour threshold and the same amounts, but it is not final yet.

Travelling in summer without breaking the bank

  • Shift by a week or two. June and September are almost as cheap as winter.
  • Compare airports. Djerba and Monastir often cost 5–35% more than Tunis: depending on where you're going, landing in Tunis and driving on can work out cheaper.
  • Look at nearby airports. Basel-Mulhouse, Milan or Paris are sometimes much cheaper – count the trip there.
  • Count the total, not just the ticket. Checked bags and a hire car add up for a family in high summer.

As a family in high summer, is flying really cheaper than the ferry with your car?
